Abortions are the most common surgical procedure done in the United States, yet it is the most unregulated. Woman put themselves at risk when they do not receive or seek out proper information on the abortion industry and especially about the "doctor" who is performing the abortion. "The owner of a chain of abortion centers in California has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison on charges of pretending to be a physician and doing abortions without a medical license. Bertha Pinedo Bugarin, 48, had pleaded no contest to seven felony counts in Los Angeles Superior Court." Read the full text at

Where do you cite the reference for the statistic that abortion is the most common surgical procedure in the U.S?
I thought it was an appendectomy that is most common.
Thanks
Here are a few sites that discuss how common this procedure is in the United States. However, because abortion is so unregulated, we may never know the exact number that are performed each year. But, to put it in perspective: there are 1.3 million surgical abortions each year in the United States and 1.2 million Caesarean occur a year. It is reported that Caesarean sections are the most common surgical procedure. Since many states do not report their abortion numbers (California, being one)....you can conclude that the number is higher than what is reported...making it most likely the most common surgical procedure.
Serrin Foster from Feminist for Life reports that: "Although abortion is the most common surgery in the
United States, opposition has prevented most legislation
to require government inspections and reporting by
clinics—standard for other medical facilities. “We have
more stringent requirements for veterinary clinics than
abortion clinics. Do we care less about women than dogs?”
said Foster. Read full article here: (http://www.feministsforlife.org/search.htm?cx=014579932717560636167%3Asn9zx7j73p8&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=abortion+most+common+surgery&sa=Search#1182)

The bottom line is that ALL surgical procedures, no matter how many are performed, should be regulated!!
Thanks for the links. Abortions are ONE of the most common surgical procedures. Your statement made it sound like it was the number ONE surgical procedure in the U.S.
I don't know. If 1.2 million Caesareans are done, and they are "called" the most common surgical procedure. But 1.3 "reported" abortions are done. That means "reported" abortions beat out caesareans by 100,000.
Sounds like it IS the number one surgical procedure. Unfortunately, as the liberal scientific/medical community doesn't want this info out (just as they've changed the hippocratic oath and medical text books that state when life begins) - they don't call abortions a "surgical procedure." They probably file them under "woman's expression of healthy choice."

Still the number ONE surgical procedure?
There were 11.5 million cosmetic surgeries done in 2006.
According to the latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics, 43.9 million inpatient surgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2003, followed closely by outpatient surgeries.
* Nervous System Surgeries: 2.2 million
* Eye Surgeries: 5.4 million
* Ear Surgeries: 878,000
* Nose, Mouth, and Pharynx Surgeries: 2.36 million
* Respiratory System Surgeries: 1.4 million
* Cardiovascular System Surgeries: 6.8 million
* Digestive System Surgeries: 12 million
* Urinary System Surgeries: 2.36 million
* Musculoskeletal System Surgeries: 7.4 million
* Integumentary (Skin) System Surgeries: 3.7 million
Thanks for playing.
Frank:
You are lumping types of surgeries together. You are not naming specific types of surgeries. Your argument is dishonest.
And..I really don't see your point. Abortions are unregulated...that is point. Find me other surgeries that are UNREGULATED. I don't think you would want a hair stylist to perform a nose job on you?....
Frank - read the blog again. 1.3 million REPORTED procedures. California doesn't even have to report theirs and they are the third largest state in the union, with the most people - 11.95% of the total U.S. population. Deduct from these numbers the California plastic surgery's, eye surgery's, nervous system surgery's etc... then we are speaking the same language.
Thanks for your input.
George
I wish the number was 1.3 million less. I am just noting that it's a little dishonest to say that abortion is the #1 or MOST common surgical procedure. I AGREE it is ONE of the most common.
Exaggeration doesn't help your cause.
Judi, lumping in numbers? Okay let's look at eye surgeries only....5.4 million vs. 1.3 million. Even if you add an exaggerated 2 million "unreported" abortions, it still would not make it more than eye surgeries. I think you are quoting or referencing statements and not actual statistics.
I agree it's a huge problem that there are so many abortions taking place. If you are going to convince people you need to be more accurate with the numbers and not just use it because it helps makes your case.
Judi,
It is shameful for any facility to operate without a license. But it's not just with abortion clinic.
You wanted me to name unregulated surgeries? How about the whole cosmetic surgery industry? Not hard to find unregulated clinics or offices. How about weight loss clinics? Also unregulated.
I see you working to make your point. And I agree that abortion is wrong and there shouldn't be so many. I just feel people are so passionate about their cause that they will exaggerate or distort the truth. You don't need to do that to make your case.
George,
http://www.guttmacher.org/presentations/state_ab_pt/california.pdf
2005 California unfortunately had 225,000+ abortion.
Even with CA, it still wouldn't make it the #1 surgical procedure.
Frank,
One abortion is too many. The fact that our country legally allows for someone to go inside a woman's womb and kill the child is horrifying.
Stop using Guttmacher - it's the same as asking Planned Parenthood if the life inside really is a human being or not - they will say no, according to their research, regardless of the medical and biological reality. Because if people realize it's a human being - less people will get abortions. "Oh, it's just a glob of tissue invading your body."
If CA is legally unregulated to disclose their numbers, they can make up whatever numbers they want. Which means, less abortions = more Federal and state support.
The former head of NARAL Dr. Nathanson admitted to lying under oath, with "research papers," about the number of illegal abortions that happened per year prior to Roe v. Wade. Please look him up. He has a lot to say, being a former abortionist himself. Look up Norma Jean McCorvy (Jane Roe), look up Jill Stanick, former abortion nurse, regarding infants born alive after botched abortions.
The abortion industry lies because they make money. We get nothing. So why should we lie? If our stats don't match yours, it's because statistics can always be manipulated. Our "agenda" is only to make this world a better place and to save innocent human lives.
George,
Okay if not Muttgacher (and you admitted that even you use it), what study or statistic are you going to use? Who else done one?
Even if we use your exaggerated numbers, abortion would still NOT be the #1 most common procedure. Stop using that lie. Abortion is ONE of the most common procedure. There is nothing wrong with saying that. It doesn't hurt your cause if you just say that. In fact you would have more integrity because it is true.
Your agenda is to divide America and tell people how to live instead of accepting people for their differences. And proof of that is you saying I am NOT a Catholic because of my views on abortion.
I don't say you are not a Catholic because of your views on abortion.... YOU say you are not a Catholic because of your views on abortion.
